Aliphatic Binder Calculator (kg)
While the binding and curing process is similar to standard binders, its true value lies in its optical clarity and colour-fast performance. Using this binder is an investment in the long-term aesthetic of your play area, preventing the dulling or colour-shifting that can occur with lesser adhesives. For any project using light or brightly coloured EPDM granules, our Aliphatic Binder is the only professional choice to guarantee the surface looks as good as new for its entire lifespan.
Why Choose Aliphatic Binder Over Aromatic?
The choice is simple and depends entirely on the colour of the rubber granules you are using.Choose Aromatic Binder for its cost-effectiveness when using dark-coloured rubber mulch (black, browns, reds). Its natural ambering effect goes unnoticed with these colours.
You must choose Aliphatic Binder (This Product) when using any light or brightly coloured EPDM granules (blues, yellows, greens, oranges, greys, beige, etc.). Using a cheaper Aromatic binder on these colours would cause them to develop a noticeable yellow/brown tint over time, ruining the aesthetic of the surface. Choosing Aliphatic binder is the only way to guarantee the long-term colour vibrancy of your EPDM surface.

Required Tools & Safety Gear
Tools:
- Forced-Action Mixer (Do NOT use a standard cement mixer)
- Measuring Jug
- Wheelbarrow & Steel Trowel
Safety Gear:
- Nitrile Gloves
- Safety Glasses or Goggles
- Long-sleeved clothing
Step 1: Safety & Preparation
Ensure you are wearing appropriate safety gear, including gloves and eye protection. The binder is extremely sticky. Protect surrounding kerbs and surfaces with duct tape or plastic sheeting before you begin mixing.
Step 2: Use the Correct Ratio
The performance of the surface depends on using the correct amount of binder. Our standard, recommended ratio is 1 part binder to 4 parts EPDM granules by weight (a 20% binder ratio).
- For every 25kg bag of our EPDM Granules, you will use 6.25kg of Aliphatic Binder.
Do not try to stretch the binder by using less; this will result in a weak surface that crumbles over time.
Step 3: The Mixing Process
A forced-action mixer is essential for ensuring every granule is coated.
- Add the full 25kg bag of EPDM granules to the mixer first.
- Start the mixer, and then immediately begin pouring the 6.25kg of binder slowly and evenly over the tumbling granules.
- Allow the machine to mix for 2-4 minutes. The goal is to have every single granule coated in a uniform, glossy film.
Step 4: Immediate Application
Once mixed, the curing process has begun. The mixture must be transported and troweled into place immediately. Work in batches and always maintain a 'wet edge' to ensure seamless joins between mixes.
