Aromatic Binder Calculator
While incredibly strong, this binder has a natural amber hue and will darken slightly over time with exposure to UV light. For this reason, we exclusively recommend its use with our darker rubber mulch colours, where this subtle shift will go unnoticed. For a long-lasting, durable, and economical bonded rubber installation, our Aromatic Binder is the proven and trusted choice.
Aromatic vs. Aliphatic Binder: What's the Difference?
This is a crucial technical distinction based on how the binder reacts to sunlight (UV radiation). The binder you choose depends entirely on the colour of the rubber you are using. Aromatic Binder (This Product): This is the strong, cost-effective workhorse of the industry. Its one drawback is that it is not UV stable, meaning it will naturally amber or darken when exposed to sunlight. This makes it the perfect choice for dark-coloured rubber like brown, red, and black, as the subtle colour shift of the binder is unnoticeable. Aliphatic Binder: This is a premium binder that is completely UV stable. It will not amber or yellow over time, even under direct sunlight. Because it is significantly more expensive, it is reserved for projects using brightly coloured EPDM rubber granules like blue, green, yellow, orange, or beige, where colour stability and vibrancy are essential. In short:
Use Aromatic Binder for dark rubber colours.
Use Aliphatic Binder for bright or light rubber colours.

Required Tools & Safety Gear
Tools:
- Forced-Action Mixer (Do NOT use a standard cement mixer)
- Measuring Jug
- Wheelbarrow & Steel Trowel
Safety Gear:
- Nitrile Gloves
- Safety Glasses or Goggles
- Long-sleeved clothing
Step 1: Safety & Preparation
Ensure you are wearing appropriate safety gear, including gloves and eye protection. The binder is extremely sticky. Protect surrounding kerbs and surfaces with duct tape or plastic sheeting before you begin mixing.
Step 2: Use the Correct Ratio
The performance of the surface depends on using the correct amount of binder. Our standard, recommended ratio is 1 part binder to 4 parts rubber mulch by weight (a 20% binder ratio).
- For every 20kg bag of our Rubber Mulch, you will use 5kg of Aromatic Binder.
Do not try to stretch the binder by using less; this will result in a weak surface that crumbles over time.
Step 3: The Mixing Process
A forced-action mixer is essential for ensuring every piece of rubber is coated.
- Add the full 20kg bag of rubber mulch to the mixer first.
- Start the mixer, and then immediately begin pouring the 5kg of binder slowly and evenly over the tumbling rubber.
- Allow the machine to mix for 2-4 minutes. The goal is to have every single rubber shred coated in a uniform, glossy film.
Step 4: Immediate Application
Once mixed, the curing process has begun. The bonded rubber mix must be transported and troweled into place immediately. Work in batches and always maintain a 'wet edge' to ensure seamless joins between mixes.
