Upgrade your playground with the exceptional durability and safety of our Rubber Mulch. Manufactured from 100% recycled passenger tyres, this eco-friendly surfacing is shredded and cleaned to remove all steel wiring, resulting in a soft, safe, and wire-free product. The rubber nuggets are then coated in a range of vibrant, UV-stable colours that resist fading and keep your play area looking bright for years. Unlike wood fiber or bark, rubber mulch does not absorb water, rot, or freeze in winter, ensuring a clean, usable surface all year round. It offers superior drainage and does not attract insects or pests. As a loose-fill material, it provides one of the highest critical fall height ratings available, making it an incredibly safe choice for use under all types of play equipment.

Installing loose-fill Rubber Mulch is a quick and simple project that delivers lasting safety and vibrant colour. Proper containment is the key to a successful, low-maintenance installation.

Before You Begin: Tools and Materials

Tools:

  • Spade & Shovel
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Landscape Rake
  • Tape Measure
  • Craft Knife (for geotextile fabric)

Materials:

  • Rubber Mulch
  • Containment Edging: Heavy-duty timber, concrete kerbing, or specific playground borders
  • Heavy-Duty Geotextile Weed-Suppressing Membrane

Step 1: Ground Preparation & Containment

A solid perimeter is crucial to contain the loose rubber nuggets and maintain a safe, consistent depth.

  1. Clear the Area: Remove all grass, weeds, sharp rocks, and roots from the installation area.
  2. Excavate (Optional but Recommended): For a flush finish, excavate the area to your desired depth (e.g., 100mm). If not excavating, ensure you have a solid border to contain the full height of the mulch.
  3. Install Containment: Securely install a permanent, heavy-duty edging around the entire perimeter of the play area. The border must be high enough to contain the full depth of the rubber mulch (e.g., 100mm) plus a little extra to prevent overflow.

Step 2: Installing the Geotextile Fabric

This barrier is essential to prevent the rubber from mixing with the soil below and to stop weeds from growing through.

  1. Lay Geotextile Membrane: Roll out the heavy-duty weed-suppressing membrane across the entire prepared base, running it up the inside edges of your containment border.
  2. Overlap and Secure: Overlap any joins by at least 150mm. This layer is vital for keeping the rubber clean and preventing it from sinking into the sub-base over time.

Step 3: Filling with Rubber Mulch

The final step is to fill the area with the clean, durable rubber nuggets.

  1. Transport the Mulch: Rubber mulch is typically delivered in bulk bags. Use a wheelbarrow to transport the mulch from the bag into the contained play area.
  2. Fill to Depth: Dump the mulch into the area, filling it completely. Aim for a consistent depth of 100mm for commercial applications to ensure EN 1177 compliance.
  3. Level the Surface: Use a landscape rake to spread the rubber nuggets evenly across the entire area, ensuring a level finish. The material does not require compaction.
Playground Repair Ltd ensures your Rubber Mulch is delivered conveniently and ready for installation. The mulch is typically delivered in bulk bags (also known as tote bags), each containing a specific weight (e.g., 500kg). Once your order is placed, our logistics partner will contact you to arrange a suitable date for a kerbside delivery via a tail-lift lorry. Please ensure the delivery point is on a flat, solid surface accessible to a pallet truck. The bulk bag(s) will be offloaded and left at the kerbside; it is the customer’s responsibility to move the mulch to the play area.
